Yay, It’s preptober season 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽. As you all know NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is next month 🥰, are you excited, cause I am…If you haven’t done Nanowrimo before, now is a good time to give it a try as It’s really exciting. Let’s get right into it 😉
What Is NaNoWriMo?
Nanowrimo means national novel writing month, NaNoWriMo is a competition against yourself and time, so basically it’s a write-at-thon in November, just like a marathon but this time you are writing not running 😉, It is a worldwide competition that runs from the 1st of November to the 30th of November and ends at exactly 11:59 pm and the goal is to write 50,000 words, Nano began in 1999 as a straightforward challenge to help people write their novel for 30 days in November.
There are two types of Nanowrimo, If you see people doing Nanowrimo in the middle of the year and you’re wondering which one is the real one, they are both Nanowrimo but the one that happens in November is the main one, over time there has been a release of a new project mid-year which is in April and July, Which is called camp NaNoWriMo but we’re not going into all of that here, my main focus is on Nanowrimo in November which is next month and disclaimer I will be doing Nanowrimo for the very first time this year but I am doing it solely to finish my WIP which I will be telling you about very soon 😁🙈, are you excited?
Why Should You Consider NaNoWriMo?
1.To Challenge Yourself
Like I said here to challenge yourself sometimes, try to be spontaneous once in a while, so if you’ve not tried it before, now is a good time to give it a trial.
2.So You Can Say You Have Done It.
Just so you can say I have done NaNoWriMo, I know It sounds cheesy but Let it be just something you tick off your list 😉 and say been there, done that🚶🏽♀️🚶🏼.
3.To Stretch Your Writing Muscles
When you write often in such little time you’re letting your creative juices flow and run wild so with that you are training your writing muscles.
4.To Form A Habit
When you do something constantly over a period of time roughly 21 days, It becomes a habit so when you write every day, over time, it becomes a normal thing which helps you create a new habit for yourself.
5.To Join A Writing Community💪🏽👭👬
Writing can be very lonely and Nanowrimo gives you an opportunity for you to join people from all over the world to write, for me this gives you a sense of accountability and you can join writing groups or create your own on the Nano website. You could also share ideas with people, which is very nice.
6.For Peace Of Mind
Don’t you just want to set your ideas free? Those ideas that have been hitting your head non-stop, now I’m not saying you should be reckless but you should give these ideas a chance, you feel free and your ideas feel free, it is a win-win situation, does that make sense to you?
7.To Build Your Writing Routine
You can’t have a writing routine if you don’t write right? So Nanowrimo helps you to create a writing routine if you don’t already have one. It helps you know what works for you over time.
8.Nanowrimo Helps You Track Your Progress & Milestones
You are not a terrible writer, If you don’t have writing goals, but writing goals help you get motivated to write more, after accomplishing your writing milestones & goals, It makes you feel pumped up and encourages you to write even more. So I would encourage you to set your goals & milestones. When you start you can start with something small that you could work with and Nanowrimo is a good time to track your progress as you have to log in your word count on the Nano website regularly.
9.You Will Participate In Events designed To Finish Your Novel
Nano provides regular events that’ll help you finish your novel, Nanowrimo is concerned about you finishing your novel, so there are regular events provided for you to do so, isn’t that cool?
10.Nano Improves Your Writing Craft
It eventually improves your writing craft, because when you write so much in such little time, your creative juices are running wild and your writing muscles are getting toned and everything is coming together to make you a better writer than you were Pre-nano, now I am not telling you to have overly large expectations of turning into Stephen King after Nanowrimo but there will be some improvements in your writing.
Mind Shifts For NaNoWriMo
These are the things you should keep in mind before Nanowrimo begins
1.You Are Not Alone
Nanowrimo gives you the opportunity to communicate with other writers all across the world, there are writing groups and so many wonderful opportunities for you to meet other great writers like yourself, It feels so amazing that you will be writing with thousands of people across the globe, they also have physical meetups in your region, when you create an account, you will be prompted to input your region in your dashboard which we help you connect with other writers for a physical meeting if you don’t fancy physical writing meetups, they are writing spaces online that you could communicate with other people and that’s so amazing, so just keep that in mind you are not alone. This helps you to stay accountable with others in the writing community during NaNoWriMo.
2.Kill The Comparison
Don’t let what others are doing make you feel discouraged because your word count is not at its best at the moment, I would like to say all progress is progress, so kill the comparison, stop comparing yourself to the next person.
3.It Will Not Be Perfect
I want you to keep this in mind, you are writing so many words so fast, you’re supposed to write fifty thousand words(50,000) in 30 days that is one thousand six hundred and sixty-seven (1667) words per day and frankly, some days you may be totally out of new ideas to write when you sit in front of your desktop or laptop, So pushing yourself to write every day in November, put in mind that it’s not going to be perfect, you just want to get the words on paper.
4.Don’t Edit As You Write
I am pleading with you on this one, don’t edit as you write, get the words out first, It’s not time to start a fight with your inner critic on what’s right, you can always do this after the writing process.
5.It Is Okay If You Don’t Finish
You are not a failure, If you don’t finish your novel during Nanowrimo, all progress is good progress.
6.Shop For Healthy Snacks, Fruits & Nuts
You’re going to be sitting a lot, so healthy snacks are a must. If not you will be snacking on junk food a lot and that is not good for you. shop for healthy snacks that you love to eat with variety, so you don’t get bored with it.
7.Don’t Neglect Self-Care
I am all about self-care for writers, here is a good place to start If you want some ideas for your self-care journey while writing, so don’t push yourself to your breaking point because burn out is not healthy at all.
